On Sunday Windsor Park hosts the 2024 BetMcLean Cup Final between Linfield and PLAYR-FIT Championship side Portadown (3pm k.o. all-ticket).

Linfield’s road to the final began with a home victory over Queen’s University, followed by impressive wins at Glentoran, Larne and Dungannon Swifts. The Blues are going for a second consecutive final success, having defeated Coleraine 2-0 in last year’s showpiece game.

Portadown’s journey to the final has taken in wins over Coagh United, Crusaders, Loughgall and Glenavon. The Ports last lifted this trophy in 2009 when they defeated Newry City with the game’s only goal.

David Healy will certainly not underestimate the threat posed by a Portadown team who will relish the underdog tag. Niall Currie’s side sit 3rd in the Championship table, and the Portadown manager has put together a squad laced with Premiership experience, most notably in defenders Ross Redmond, Dougie Wilson and Aaron Traynor. One player to watch up front is former Dungannon Swifts striker Ryan Mayse who has hit 16 goals in all competitions this season.

It promises to be an intriguing afternoon of football, played out before an expectant crowd – for Linfield the main aim is to retain the trophy for a record 12th time.
