BOXING DAY DERBY: LINFIELD V GLENTORAN

Linfield continue their European campaign when they face FK Zalgiris at the LFF Stadium in Vilnius in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the UEFA Europa Conference League (5pm k.o.). The return leg is at Windsor Park on 31st July and the winner will face Faroe Islands side Vikingur in August.

When Linfield previously played FK Zalgiris the Lithuanians won 5-2 on aggregate in the Champions League in 2021.

FK Zalgiris were eliminated from this season’s Champions League, losing to Maltese side Hamrum Spartans on penalties. In domestic football they currently sit mid-table in the A Lyra league table after 20 games played. Manager Vladimir Cheburin has assembled an experienced cosmopolitan squad including players from numerous countries in addition to home grown talent.

Linfield’s Champions League clashes with Irish Premier Champions Shelbourne were incident laden and the 1-2 aggregate reversal was frustrating for The Blues after David Healy’s men gave everything on the pitch.

A stern task awaits Linfield at the compact LFF Stadium, capacity 5,067, and European football regulars Zalgiris are well versed in the competition.

Hopefully The Blues can take a positive result away from Lithuania to ensure another big night of European football at Windsor Park.
