The 35-year-old midfielder has committed his future to the Blues as he continues his recovery from a long-term injury, with his focus firmly set on returning to action next season.

Speaking after putting pen to paper, Shields admitted he was relieved to get the deal completed.

“I’m very happy it’s done,” he said. “When you pick up a long-term injury at my age, you do start to think about other things, but I’m glad everything is sorted now. My focus is on getting back fit and the progress is going really well. As much as I’d love to be involved this season, I know I have to concentrate on being ready for next year.”

Shields also spoke honestly about the challenge of watching from the sidelines.

“It’s been torture really. There’s the physical side of the injury, but the mental side is just as hard. I’ve never had an injury like this before and I’ve always been a player who’s involved in everything. Sitting and watching has been really difficult – I’m not a great spectator.”

Reflecting on his time at Windsor Park since arriving in 2021, Shields highlighted just how much he has enjoyed his spell with the club.

“I’ve loved my time here. I’ve never hidden that. Since I made the switch in 2021, I can’t really see myself playing anywhere else. Hopefully I’m here for the foreseeable future and I just want to get back playing. Two league titles, two League Cups and European runs along the way – that’s why you play football and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

The experienced midfielder believes the high standards at the club are what drew him to Linfield and continue to motivate him.

“That’s why I came here – the demands and expectations. With me being out for a year now, I’ve another point to prove. Some players at my age might think that’s them finished, but it’s given me extra drive and fire in the belly. I’ve always played my best when I’ve had something to prove, and I definitely have that for next season.”

Shields even joked about his future off the pitch after recently helping in a video campaign to boost ticket sales for the festive derby.

“I think I single-handedly sold the most tickets in Big Two derby history,” he laughed. “When I finish here, they’ll probably find something for me to do in the office!”
