It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Billy Wilson, a cherished member of the seven trophy-winning team, who passed away this morning.
Billy was one of the last surviving members of Linfield’s legendary seven-trophy team from the 1961/62 season. Only Hubert Barr, Isaac Andrews, and Bobby Irvine now remain from that iconic squad.
Born on September 23, 1936, in Portadown, Billy began his footballing journey with a spell at Burnley between 1955 and 1958. During this time, he earned 15 Youth International caps and represented Northern Ireland at B level, featuring against Romania in 1957.
He joined Linfield in October 1958, making his debut in an away fixture against Glenavon. Over the years, Billy became a key part of the club’s golden era, collecting an impressive array of honours. His achievements include:
-
Two Irish Cup winners’ medals (1960 and 1962)
-
Three County Antrim Shield medals (1958/59, 1960/61, 1962/63)
-
City Cup, Ulster Cup, and Gold Cup winners’ medals, all during the historic 1961/62 season
Billy made 48 appearances and scored one goal during that remarkable 1961/62 campaign, also earning an Irish League winners’ medal. He represented Linfield in four European matches before his departure in 1965. Two years later, he signed with Ballymena.
In the 1969/70 season, Billy returned to the club as a coach for Linfield Swifts, continuing his lifelong connection to the Blues. In recognition of his contribution to the club’s history, Billy, like all his teammates from the seven-trophy season, was honoured with life membership.
Sadly, in later years, declining health prevented Billy from attending games. He spent his final years at Hamilton Court care home in Armagh, where he was visited by a Linfield director who brought the League Cup (formerly the City Cup) to share a special moment with him.
Everyone at Linfield extends their heartfelt condolences to Billy’s family and friends at this difficult time. His legacy will forever be part of Linfield’s proud history.
