BOXING DAY DERBY: LINFIELD V GLENTORAN

Tributes have been paid to lifelong Linfield supporter Jimmy McCaig who died in Craigavon Area hospital on 19thAugust following a long illness. He was in his 80s.

The Antrim town man, who lived in Portadown for all of his married life, is survived by his wife Muriel and son Clive.

A Linfield Member for many years, Jimmy was chairman of the County Armagh Amalgamated Linfield Supporters Club and rarely missed a Blues game, home or away.

Linfield Honorary Vice President Billy Kennedy was a close friend and associate of Jimmy who he described as ‘a dedicated, genuine, Blueman’.

“Jimmy was Blue to the core; a totally committed supporter who relished the phenomenal success which Linfield teams enjoyed through the decades, starting with the 1961/62 Seven Trophy team. I shared Jimmy’s ambitions, comradeship and leadership in the County Armagh club and I deeply mourn his passing.”

Fellow journalist and Linfield supporter Ivan Little recalls a story he wrote in 1971 which featured Jimmy McCaig speaking about his only son.

Ivan recalls that Jimmy proudly told him he called his son Clive Dickson McCaig after ‘Duke of Windsor’ Tommy Dickson.

“Tommy Dickson was Jimmy’s hero as a Linfield supporter. Jimmy’s attraction to Linfield played a big part in his life. A lovely man was Jim”, said Ivan.

The sincere sympathy of Linfield Football Club is extended to the McCaig family.
