Linfield Football Club were delighted to welcome Billy Kennedy Jr., the son of 1950s Linfield hero Billy Kennedy, to Windsor Park over the weekend.
Billy Jr. was visiting Belfast and took the opportunity to learn more about his father’s remarkable footballing legacy at the club. During his visit, he was warmly received by Club Director Stephen Shaw, Club Chaplain Paul Reid, and club historian Michael Cockcroft, who provided a guided tour of the Linfield offices and Windsor Park.
While in the tunnel area, first-team manager David Healy took time out from his League Cup Final preparations to meet Billy Jr. and reflect on his father’s contribution to the club.
As part of the visit, Michael Cockcroft presented Billy Jr. with a detailed dossier documenting his father’s outstanding achievements in a Linfield shirt, including every appearance and goal scored. Those in attendance were left in awe of Billy Kennedy’s incredible record:

-
1954/55: Played 41, scored 27
-
1955/56: Played 42, scored 31

Billy Kennedy’s story is truly extraordinary. He signed for Linfield in May 1954, just before his 20th birthday, and enjoyed two hugely successful seasons before retiring from football prior to turning 22 to pursue a life in ministry.
During his time at Windsor Park, he achieved remarkable success:

-
County Antrim Shield Winner (scored twice in the 3–0 final win over Crusaders)

Billy Kennedy also enjoyed notable success on the international stage. On 5th December 1953, he scored a hat-trick against Scotland in a Junior International at Windsor Park. The following year, he was part of the Ireland team that won the British Amateur International Championship — the first time Ireland had achieved this honour.
To round off a memorable weekend, Billy Jr. attended Sunday’s League Cup Final, witnessing the current generation of Linfield players add further silverware to the club’s illustrious history.
