Linfield Women 1–2 Shamrock Rovers
All-Island Cup | Midgley Park | 5 April 2026
Ryan McConville’s Linfield Women side fell to a narrow 2–1 defeat against Shamrock Rovers in their opening All-Island Cup fixture at Midgley Park, despite a spirited late push from a youthful Blues team.
Coming into the match on the back of a hard-fought 3–1 victory over Crusaders Strikers in the League Cup, Linfield were eager to extend their winning run, and they started brightly. Early attacking intent saw Zoe McGlynn test the Rovers goalkeeper from distance after some neat build-up play through midfield, though her effort was comfortably gathered.
The first half remained closely contested, with both sides probing for an opener. The visitors came closest before the break when a powerful strike from the right-hand side looked destined for the top corner, only for Linfield goalkeeper Lillie Woods to produce a stunning full-stretch save, tipping the ball onto the crossbar to keep the game level at the interval.
However, the game turned decisively in the early stages of the second half. Shamrock Rovers emerged with renewed intensity, and as McConville later described, “four minutes of madness” proved costly for the hosts. Two quickfire goals from the Dublin side left Linfield with a mountain to climb.
Despite the setback, Linfield refused to fold. The Blues continued to battle and were rewarded late on when Lauren McLaren pulled a goal back in the 88th minute, firing home from a set piece to give the home side a lifeline.
Buoyed by the goal, Linfield pushed forward in search of an equaliser. A well-worked move in stoppage time saw Eva Myles receive the ball on the edge of the box. Showing composure, she dummied a shot before striking goalwards, but her effort was blocked by a Rovers defender. Moments later, the full-time whistle confirmed a narrow defeat.
While the result didn’t go their way, it was a valiant effort from a young Linfield side, particularly given the absence of several key players through injury.
Attention now turns back to cup action, with McConville’s side set to travel to Bluebell Stadium to face Lisburn Ladies in the next round of the League Cup on 19th April.
