Predominantly a right-sided defender, Ethan has also played in central midfield for the Blues and he hails from Benburb, eight miles outside Dungannon, Co. Tyrone. He’s a Northern Ireland U21 International who represented Co. Tyrone in the SuperCup NI.
McGee came through the ranks of the Dungannon Swifts youth academy, Dungannon United Youth, before progressing through Dungannon Swifts’ U18s and U20s on his journey to the Swifts’ senior team. He would go on to make 128 appearances for the Stangmore Park club, scoring seven goals.
He made his debut for Dungannon Swifts in a 2-1 home league defeat against Glenavon on February 23, 2021, aged 18, and quickly established himself as a regular in Terry Fitzpatrick’s team. McGee’s influence continued to grow which resulted in him being named the Swifts’ vice-captain at the age of 20. McGee scored a vital goal for the Swifts when they defeated Annagh United in the 2022/23 NIFL Premiership promotion/relegation play-off match.
Whilst on the books of Dungannon Swifts, Ethan was a student of NIFL’s full-time scholarship programme for two years.
Linfield manager David Healy swooped to bring 21-year-old McGee to Windsor Park for an undisclosed fee in the January 2024 transfer window, with the defender signing a two-and-a-half year contract. He made his debut as a substitute in a 2-1 win away to Loughgall on January 13, 2024, and he scored his first goal for the Blues in a 3-1 win away to Institute in an Irish Cup quarter-final tie.
Linfield won the League Cup in McGee’s first season at Windsor Park, however he was cup-tied due to prior involvement in the competition with Dungannon Swifts and therefore he didn’t get a winners’ medal. He played and scored in the 2023-24 Irish Cup final as the Blues were defeated by Cliftonville.
