The Linfield Academy Under 15 squad who recently competed in the Somme Memorial Youth tournament in France were given a warm welcome at Windsor Park on Saturday. The team and coaches were introduced to the Linfield fans at half-time during Saturday’s game against Larne and were given a warm reception by supporters as they walked around the perimeter of the pitch.
Just over two weeks ago the Under 15 squad represented the club at the inaugural Somme Memorial tournament in France. They put up an excellent performance in the tournament, losing narrowly to English side Leyton Orient in the final, and were a credit to the club both on and off the pitch as they visited some of the significant First World War memorials in the region.
The Linfield Somme Memorial Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Bertrancourt and Albert for their warm welcome and fantastic hospitality during this visit. We would also pay tribute to our tour guide, Phil Hamilton from 36th Ulster Division Memorial Tours, who played such a key role in organising the trip and conducting the various tours. His exceptional knowledge and detailed research of the Linfield Fallen made it such a memorable experience for those in attendance. We would also thank the Cregagh Wandsworth and Ormeau branch of the Royal British Legion and Darren Shufflebottom for supplying Poppy wreaths and crosses and also Lisa Hammond from Aer Lingus for her help and assistance in making our travel arrangements.
